How does it work?
VOICE OVER IP
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that transmits your voice over the Internet rather than through traditional phone lines. Our hosted PBX solution uses it to connect your VoIP phone to the vControl system through your internet connection, letting you have a customisable, personal service that only requires an internet connection.
Private Branch Exchanges (PBXs) are spectacularly complicated and most PBX providers charge you an arm and a leg to make the changes you want, and usually take their time doing it! vControl was developed with this in mind and we’ve gone a step further, creating an interface that lets you make changes with a click of the mouse and allows you be in control any time, even at 3 in the morning!
The vControl website is designed to be straight forward and user-friendly, letting you manage your PBX solution yourself, in a way that is easy to use and lets you see what services you are using at any given time.
Once you are logged in, vControl lets you change anything you like and you can start using your modified system straight away!
PUBLIC SWITCHED TELEPHONE NETWORK
When voice is sent by your phone to BlueStream, it is transmitted via a high-speed computer network to as close as possible to its final destination – be that nationally or the next suburb. Via huge capacity Internet to Telephone gateways, your call is placed on the normal Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and reaches its destination as a normal telephone call. Not only is it a local call, but volume discounts mean we can offer you untimed call rates!
Why is it awesome?

WHAT INTERNET CONNECTION DO I NEED?
While the speed of the Internet connection isn’t critical, reliability and available bandwidth do affect call quality. Make sure you choose an ISP with a guaranteed up-time to ensure a consistent and reliable connection. As our system is connected to the PIPE Networks backbone, we recommend you select an ISP that “peers” with PIPE Networks.
To manage your bandwidth we recommend you have an ADSL2+ modem that supports Quality of Service (QoS), which will make sure that activity on your computers (receiving email, streaming videos, downloading etc) doesn’t affect your phones. Or if you’re on fibre, well – it’s going to work brilliantly!
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
You need a VoIP phone that supports the SIP protocol, such as the Yealink T42G, the Snom m3 or the Linksys WAP330. Once you’re logged in to vControl, we’ve got a selection of office phones, cordless handsets and modem routers available for purchase and we can configure it to your desired extension before we send it out to you.
CAN I KEEP MY CURRENT NUMBER?
Yes! In addition to offering Direct Inward Dialling numbers (DIDs) which are non-portable standard xx-digit (including area code) New Zealand numbers, we also offer portable numbers, and can arrange to port your number in from all major telephone providers. We can also help you port the number out, should you decide not to use BlueStream’s services any longer.
WHAT ABOUT 0508, 0800 AND 08xx NUMBERS?
These numbers are configured to have a ‘landing number’ which can be any landline or mobile number in New Zealand. Since the landing number need not necessarily be your BlueStream number, we recommend using a third party to provide these services. We use and recommend.
